June in New York at Belmont Park…the Belmont Stakes remains one of the biggest races of the year. So big in fact that its attendance ranks 4th in the United States. At least that’s what Wikipedia says. I know some people who think it’s the absolute best, second only to the Kentucky Derby.

Thoroughbreds, geldings and colts…Oh my!

The Belmont Stakes wraps up the Triple Crown in the United States. The Preakness and formerly mentioned Derby are the other two races involved. A guide to this year’s Stakes can be found on line at various websites or at the home site of the Stakes itself.

Who’s In The Running This Year?

Who runs and who doesn’t could have a lot to do with the above mentioned races before even getting to the Stakes. Looking good for this year’s race are Algorithms, Union Rags and Hansen. Now that’s as far as horses go. Owners that are expected to do well are Klaravich Stables Inc., Robert LaPenta and Ahmed Zayat's Zayat Stables LLC.

It's a bit early to determine the Belmont Stakes odds but not to be forgotten, top contending trainers are Dale Romans, Nick Zito and Steve Asmussen, Bob Baffert and Todd Pletcher. Place your bets ladies and gents!

Will This Be The Orioles Year?

Anyone optimistically hoping that the Baltimore Orioles could come in first place this year is indeed a loyal fan. One fan that I heard from was hoping for fourth place at best.

January 21 Marked Another Orioles Fan Fest

With spring training right around the corner the Orioles kicked off the season with their usual Fan Fest; the second for Buck Showalter, their manager. Whereas the fans were seemingly as loyal as ever, the anticipation and excitement of an improved season seemed somewhat less than exuberant. Not much has been done in the off-season and that worries some fans. The O’s have acquired two new pitchers, to their credit; but will it be enough to spur the team on to a better season this year than last?

Showalter And His Team Finished 34-23 This Time Last Year

Last year’s acquisition of Mark Reynolds and J.J. Hardy may have been substantial moves but proved less than stellar. Fielding errors still seemed a problem. The young pitchers acquired by the O’s this year will hopefully lift the spirits of the team and the fans.

As mentioned earlier, the optimistic chances for the Orioles this year may well be proven or disproven by the number of Orioles tickets sold preseason.
