Keeping Your Eyes Healthy

e17Oftentimes, men will ignore going to the doctor for symptoms that would send a woman to the nearest phone to make an appointment. That is true with men's vision along with their general health. It's very important that you keep your eyes healthy, though, so that you can take care of your family or continue to move toward finding that special someone. Eyeglasses are popular now, so don't worry about women not being interested in you just because you wear spectacles. Many women find glasses on a man very attractive.

Get Checked Out Regularly

If you haven't been to an eye doctor in a while, it's time that you made an appointment. It may not be the most fun thing to do with your time, but that doesn't mean that you shouldn't make the time for it. Most eye and vision problems can be corrected, and the sooner you know about a problem the easier it is to treat. Vision issues generally require glasses or contact lenses – or corrective surgery like LASIK, but there are many non-vision eye issues that are easily treatable, as well.

If You Need Glasses – Wear Them

Ignoring what your doctor tells you isn't a smart idea, but it's something that a lot of people do anyway. You may not take your eye doctor too seriously, but your eyes are very important. Not having your sight could be devastating to you, your career, your family, and your daily life. You could also endanger yourself or others if you don't see well and you get into an accident. Wear your glasses or contact lenses, even if you don't want to – it could save your life.

Eyeglasses are a great way to make a statement about who you are. They can be fun and fashionable, as well as helping you to see better. Whether you choose glasses or contact lenses, or just go to your eye doctor to make sure that your eyes are healthy, don't put off that appointment any longer.

How to Keep Stress at a Minimum for the Small Business Owner

t59Stress is with us throughout most business days but there are things we can do that can lower stress, especially for the small business owner.

Find out the Real Problem

For instance, when you feel stress coming on, focus on what is causing the problem. Sometimes business stress comes from poor management, poor financial management or bad marketing. Answers to these problems might be joining one or two business groups or finding those in business who you respect and those you can talk to, about your concerns. Then, take away the fear from the anxiety that you’re feeling. Fear can be helpful because it’s rational; but anxiety is irrational and produces nothing good. Do what you can to understand the anxiety and then force it from your mind. Many in business have found relief from anxiety by exercising. Sometimes just going outside for a 10 minute walk can help greatly.

Keep Guilt and Forgiveness at the Forefront

Keep guilt out of your mind and learn to forgive yourself for mistakes that you make. Stay flexible and keep going. Guilt will drag you down and waste your time. Then, keep a healthy perspective on your work. No one is perfect; mistakes are made everyday. And, be responsible and accountable for what you do. Keep a positive attitude. Do the best you can in your business and if you find that your best is not good enough, then don’t ruminate or be hard on yourself. Look into other business ventures or go back to your former employment. Sometimes it takes several shots at something before hitting on the right thing.

Other ways to help lower stress are: by developing a specific and well thought out plan—a plan that will guide your business. Realistic and measurable goals can help greatly in lowering stress because you know you have a solid plan. And, always address issues as they arise and take care of them, soon. And lastly, create and maintain an open atmosphere where everyone can feel safe and not feel intimidated when they have to discuss problems.

Don't stress the small stuff at work. Make sure to have all of your office supplies fully stocked and ready to go, such as xerox 108r00608.

The HPV Virus in Men is More Common Than You Think

men 2Although much is written about HPV, the human papillomavirus virus’ impact on women’s health not much focus has been given to HPV in men. This is in part due to the fact that there have not been many studies conducted on men with the disease. HPV is contracted through skin to skin contact. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), there are over 100 types of HPV and 40 strands are contracted through sexual contact. Many men are infected but show no outward signs of the infection and many have no lasting effects of the disease, in fact it can clear up on its own. However, when a man is infected with HPV even if he shows no sign of the disease he can pass it along to his partner through sexual contact. This is particularly dangerous because in women, HPV is a known cause of cervical cancer.

HPV and Genital Warts

Men with HPV may develop genital warts Genital warts are mildly painful or itchy clusters of tiny warts. They resemble the head of cauliflower. Genital warts appear on the genitalia, sometimes on the shaft, scrotum or the tip of the penis. They are either white or flesh-colored in appearance and can take weeks or even months to appear after being infected. Many men do not get treated for the genital warts and the condition clears up over time. However there are over the counter topical treatments to help speed up the process.

Preventing the Spread

When you are infected it is imperative to abstain from any sexual contact in order to prevent the spread of the disease. This is because for women HPV can be cancer causing. Removing the warts does not cure the infection so they may come back again. It is important to consult a physician to make sure you are free and clear of the disease before resuming sexual activities. In addition, condoms can be effective in hindering the spread of the disease although since HPV is contracted by skin to skin contact, any area that comes in contact with the infection can become infected. So since a condom only covers the penis, other surrounding areas are still susceptible to contracting the disease and capable of spreading it.

What Your Insurance Company Doesn’t Want You to Know

pill 6Health Insurers are not always honest and there are times when they keep certain information away from their clients. It is important; therefore, to know what they are keeping hidden from you.

Cheaper to Die Than to Treat the Patient

For instance, some health insurers have the attitude that it’s “cheaper to let you die than it is to treat you” for a condition that is serious. The fact is health insurers don’t deny care but they sometimes deny the payment—payment that can bring about healing, relieve pain and give comfort. But, this kind of thinking and behaving means the same thing. Denying money saves them a lot of money but it could bring about a patient’s death. Another example is when health insurers make their covered benefits as limited as the market allows and then on a routine basis, redesign benefits in order to control their high costs. And, what makes this procedure insidious and dishonest, is that they use deceitful language to hide the exclusions.

Phantom Networks

Still another example is that health insurers often use “phantom networks.” For instance, let’s say that you want to switch primary care physicians within your plan’s provider network but you find out that many of the doctors on the provider list are not accepting new patients. This is an example of a “phantom network”—a directory that is filled with new doctors who are no longer with the plan or who are not taking new patients. This is dishonest, confusing and results in a lot of lost time and lost treatment for the patient. Another thing your insurance company doesn’t want you to know is that your doctor is not always following his or her own guidelines when it comes to approving how long you will stay in a hospital or other medical decisions on your behalf. Often he or she is following guidelines developed by an actuarial consulting firm. For more information on insurance companies and your health, check out Wikipedia.

How Divorce Can Affect Men’s Health

d20Several decades ago, women were more impacted by the effects of divorce than their ex-spouses were, both emotionally and financially. Since the 1970's, however, women began attaining careers in the workforce, embraced new freedoms and independence and are now in a better position to take care of themselves and their children after a divorce. Because of this, research has recently started to focus on the effects of divorce on men's health and the results are indicating that it is no longer women who are more detrimentally affected by divorce but rather it is men who experience intense feelings of abandonment, anxiety and loneliness and for longer periods of time.

Health Problems

Because men are socialized not to verbally express their feelings of sadness, guilt or depression from an early age, they experience a larger variety of physical symptoms associated from intense feelings being "bottled" up inside of them. This causes an unhealthy amount of cortisol, the stress hormone, to remain in their system and initiate illnesses correlated with prolonged stress such as:
  • heart attacks
  • ulcers
  • gall bladder attacks
  • arteriosclerosis
  • baldness
  • weakened immune system
  • cognitive decline
Extensive research indicates that life expectancies for men who have divorced are anywhere from five to ten years lower than the national average. One researcher from Yale stated that "being divorced and a nonsmoker is only slightly less dangerous than smoking a pack a day and remaining married". In addition, the mental health of divorced men declined dramatically in some instances, with men tending to exhibit, hostility, depression, aggressiveness and addiction even years after a divorce and remarriage.

Getting Help

It has been suggested that the reason why women cope better after a divorce is because they will more readily seek out companionship and people with whom they can talk about their problems and feelings. To prevent emasculation, however, men will keep silent about their fears, feelings and anger until these strong feelings manifest in other ways that are damaging to their health. Simply talking about their feelings with a professional therapist can greatly help a man going through a troubling divorce. Others may need a little extra help, such as what an antidepressant can give, until they have reconciled with the upsetting aftermath of a divorce.

Men who have previously been physically healthy but who begin experiencing physical problems after a divorce are probably suffering from stress and should seek help immediately in order to avoid long-term, potentially fatal effects of depression and stress. However, getting an experienced divorce attorney (such as my attorney, Jim Ross) can help reduce these symptoms by providing an easier more hassle free divorce.
